For Ages: 4 1/2 years old – Kindergarten

In the kindergarten room we are a play based program that provides the children with a safe, social, emotional, physical and cognitive environment that assists the children in becoming ready for kindergarten and excelling if they are already in kindergarten.

We play outdoors as much as possible and plan our program around the children’s interests using the emergent curriculum which focuses on each child’s interests, needs and abilities.  The children are also involved in planning the activities they take part in each day.

The children are escorted to and from school each day.  Parents provide a nutritious lunch for their child and Cottage provides a snack in the morning and in the afternoon.

Our play room consists of six different centers of interest:

Quiet Center -Reading and quiet play

Floor toys   – Large and small cars, Lego, magnets and more

Dramatic play– Dress up, tea party, anything they can create

Table top toys – Puzzles, games, cards, printing practice

Sand/water play

Creative arts – Painting, drawing, gluing, free creativity, daily craft

We are also working on getting our four year olds ready to start kindergarten by teaching them to write their letters and numbers. We also help them become confident in do things on there own for example getting ready to go outside (dressing themselves in zipping up their coat, putting on there footwear, etc.) We also have a show and share day where the children can bring in something from home to share with friends as well as stand up in front of a group to talk about this toy.

When our children reach kindergarten we support what they are achieving in kindergarten by still practicing letter writing as well as writing words. We also assist them in their early reading skills through labeling the items in our playroom to help them learn the words.
